Susan Keyes - Illuminated Capitals Day 1 & 2

Created: September 30, 2019
Modified:

Lettering mostly done with Winsor & Newton Gouache and some Gold calligraphy ink and Sumi ink with a broad edge pen (I used a Parallel pen). I also used white gel pen, Copic white mixed with H2º and pointed nib, Robertson's 23kt gold leaf, both flat (Jerry Tresser adhesive) and raised with Instacoll.

Our palettes had 2 rows of 3 wells. The 1st well was the pure color (Alizarine Red), next well was mixed with white (tint) and the 3rd well was mixed with black (Shade). Repeated that process for Sap Green and Ultramarine. The last row of wells had Mauve and a tint of mauve and then the plain Gold ink.

We started out writing a larger cap "G" (Filled Caps) was then filled with gold leaving a small border around with the black. 6.0 parallel pen and then the gold with a 3.8

Then writing the rest of the word (Split Colour)  with a tint (Alizarine Red) and when dry went over the bottom section with a shade, adding gold diamonds to the centers.

The "G" was tooled and a pencil shadow (Shading) on the left side of the letters.

While waiting for the next instructions, I created this one.

The word done with the Sap Green tint and the bottom portion with the shade and adding gold diamonds.

I tooled the "L". and added pencil shadowing along the right edge.

Draw a large letter using a pointed nib in the colour of the fill (Two Colour Versals and Filigree). Then filling in the negative area with the gold ink. When dry tooling with a very fine tipped stylus on the backside to gve a raised embossing. Adding filigree details. I also added white gel pen touches.

I also added the rest of the word with a 3.8 parallel pen and Sumi ink added gold gel pen details.

And again while waiting for more instructions.

Used a pure color of Ultramarine and a shade to shadow the left side of the letter.

Gold paint in the negative area and tooled. Filigre added

Rest of the word with a 2.4 pen and Sumi ink.

ID: "R" (Roses Are Red)
Size: 7"w x 3.5"h

Draw a large letter using a black pen. Color with the gold ink. Draw a box around the letter allowing some to extend out of the box if wanted. Color the negative areas with both a color and the shade of the color leaving a white border around everything (Boxed Caps). Add white detailing. Draw another box around the original box.

I used Instacol on the ends of the letter and 23kt gold leaf.

Boy that "S" in "oses" is a mess...I was thinking of something else while writing it. BIG GRIN.

This was the final project for the day as homework...

Draw a large "l" with a black pen. Draw the vines over and under the letter. Applied 23kt gold leaf and tooled.  Added a box. I coloured with Prisma Colored Pencils adding shading with the same pencil.

Someone suggested I should add another border to surround the vines that fell outside my first box, so I did... colouring with purple.

Final touch I added gold nail art rhinestone gems

In the morning we were taught the Acanthus leaf both straight and curved. I did these in Heather Victoria Held's class, so was very familiar with it so I got side tracked a bit... The next 3 images I created to make as Xmas cards. This one used the acanthus leaf. Letter painted with the gold ink. Derwent Inktense watercolor pencils for the leaves, pattern and box area.

Doing a "Boxed Cap" and the interior negative area with "Diapering" (funny name for it...) is any repeating type of pattern.

Size: 4.5"w x 2.5"h

This one uses Holly leaves instead of the acanthus leaf and the pattern is on the diagonal.

Size: 4.25"w x 2.5"h

ID: "Manuscript page"
Size: 8.5"w x 11"h

We were all given a manuscript page to color in and add detailing. I felt like making my own although I used a lot of the sample elements.

Added Instacol for raised end of flourish details. White gel pen for "diapering" patterns. Gold ink and added lots of nail art gems in various colors.

One day I might finish it with some wording...
