Stampede11 - Roman - Life is Short
Size: 8.5" x 11"h Created: May 28,
2011 This piece won 1st place in the Romans category and 2nd place for the section. I recently took a Roman's class with Renate Worthington. She's such an excellent teacher. You can see what I did in that class HERE. I've never liked doing Roman letters, but that definitely changed after taking the class. I did the 3D background letters with an HB pencil, outlining and shading and then blending with a paper stump. I fell in love with that background... I have to do a larger one soon. The next layer is the cut work piece. I did my piece with a fat Micron pen, scanned it, then cut it out using my Cricut. I originally did it on white paper and then with a small black mat, but it just blended into the background too much, so then I did one in black and I find it just pops. I also mounted it to the main piece with thin strips of matboard underneath as a frame. In real life you get the shadows and also see the 3D letters underneath. |

I then wrote out my words for the colored pieces. Traced the shape onto some rolled out polymer clay, baked that, then carved my letters into it. Painted it with acrylic paints, let dry, sanded it, then painted it again, let dry and sanded again for the distressed look. I then edged each piece with its respective color. I wanted it to look like sign posts.
