ID: Piano Hinge Book #4 "Perfect Pear"
I used natural colored jute. I wanted the rough texture to simulate the stem. I added a brown paper leaf. This book does not stand free. It either needs to hang or lay flat. |
I love the way this book falls open. It reminds me of a pear cut in half and sitting on a plate.

I used a very strong book board (Davey board) and painted it in acrylic washes of golden yellows and browns, removing some with a tissue after each application, until I got the color I wanted. I then spattered some brown paint. I wrote my quote with a 1.5 Parallel pen and my own mix of brown acrylic ink. When the book was bound, I ran a walnut stain stamp pad over the spine edges to dirty them up a bit and mimic the core of the pear. The feel of the covers was a bit rough and matte feeling, so I put my finger into the Dorland's wax and rubbed it over the covers, then wiped it with a tissue paper. The covers now feel like the pear's skin and feel great. This was the first time I used this wax and was amazed. Words:
There are only ten minutes in the life of a pear when it is
perfect to eat. Ralph Waldo Emerson
This is a 7 signature book. |
