Well over at Created By Hand, the challenge this week is to create something with or about nature. This journal is a result of a mistake I made on the other journal "My Garden Journal". I had made the covers of the other journal. Cut my signatures and decorative paper, went to put them together to decide where to punch my holes and said "sheesh". I had cut my signature pages in the wrong orientation. I couldn't believe it. So Ok, I started creating the covers to fit these pages. Since I had scraps and things from making these pages I decided to use them for the cover by punching out flower and leaf shapes to cover the cover. I did it first with some regular copy paper so I would get a feel for the layout of the design, then started creating an outline of these shapes. I then transferred and manipulated the image so my Cricut could cut out the shape from some mat board. I must admit that was a trial and error with a bit of frustration. But eventually I got something I was content with and could work with. The Cricut doesn't cut right through the mat board , especially not when making detail designs and curves as this cover has. It tore into the mat board rather than cutting smooth. But I got it to the point where I could then run my x-acto knife through the last little depth that wasn't cut. At least now I can repeat the cutting of this cover.

When I finished cutting the cover, I colored it with Distress stamp pads (Dried Marigold, Spiced Marmalade, Mustard Seed, Shabby Shutters) using a direct to paper technique for the yellows and a sponging technique with the greens. I then punched out flowers and leaves (Marvy 2" 6 petal flower, McGill stacking series Perfect Petals Floriano #64002, Fiskars Squeeze punch daisy & teardrop shapes) as per my previous layout and adhering them to the cover. Then rubber stamped the quote using Versafine Black Onyx (all quotes from Quietfire Design). Edged the cover with a dark green Pitt  brush pen.

Each of the 7 signatures has 8 pieces of Natural Parchment stationary paper folded in half to make 32 pages per signature plus the decorative paper covers for a total of 224 writeable pages.

The second and sixth signature covers are a gold patterned decorative paper. The other signature covers are the Thai paper.

The back cover is just a rectangular shape a little larger than the pages. It, and the insides of the covers are colored with the Distress stamp pads. Quotes were added on each of those surfaces. On the back cover I also added a rose border stamped image (unknown brand) and colored it with colored pencils.

I used red eyelets and red 4 ply waxed linen thread in a Coptic binding.
