ID: MC April/12 - Comb Quill Petals - Happy Birthday card
size: 5"w x 6.5"h

There was another session of our quilling group over at Paper Pastimes this week, so was making a bunch of comb quilled petals... Then one of my friends reminded me about the Happy Birthday lettering I had manipulated and cut with my electronic cutter several years ago - so resurrected that file.... then I had this butterfly lying on my desk that I had cut a while back - and voila the card evolved.

Stamped the background (Impression Obsession CAC Vines) Fluid Chalk pads in 2 shades of green. Stamped it in the center of the card, since it was smaller than my card front. Then stamped it again on the bottom and top edges. Adhered the green narrow edged ribbon on the join points.

Electronically cut the words from white cardstock. Used the flat of my colored pencils to color the letters, adhered them to a die cut circle (Spellbinders Standard Large circle), sponged various Distress blues. Applied Glossy Accents to the letters and let dry. Then adhered it to a purple-y blue decorative die cut circle (Marianne Designs LR0168).

I did the combing with the white strips, folded it in half and inserted the tail end of the pink strip down the center, glued the ends etc., then wrapped my petal a few times with the pink strip. That was done using the whole comb of 2.5" so the petals ended up being 1-1/8" long. The smaller pink petals used about 3/4 of the comb, with the combing done with light pink strips and the same deeper pink to wrap.

The center of the flower is just a tightly rolled coil, starting with a bright yellow, the the light pink and then the deeper pink. I put some glue on the back side, adhered a punched out circle and let that dry thoroughly. The cut the coil in half with an x-acto blade.

I adhered the large petals flush to the card. The smaller petals I adhered at an angle so there was more dimensionality.

The butterfly was die cut (Crealie's "Vivienne" BFly) from some decorated paper I made a while back. Cut the under layer by hand and colored with watercolor pencils and a water brush, when dry applied Sakura Stardust clear gel pen. Adhered the layers at the body point only then onto the card.
