This is a variation of a Tab & Slot book that I saw in Shereen LaPlantz's book Art & Craft of Handmade Books. I have found other "tab & slot" or sometimes called "slip & slide" booklets that I've tried, but what I liked about this one was seeing the page below and using contrasting paper to emphasize that detail. In Shereen's book it was more of a rectangle. I decided to use an octagon.  I also put a booklet within the booklet.

I cut all my pages at the same time, folded them in half and trimmed to get them all the same size. Then cut the alternate pages either in the shape of an octagon or the triangle in the rectangle.

I started out with a beautifully embossed white paper which I colored with Portfolio, water soluble Oil Pastels in various shades (yellow, red, green, orange, blue & brown), rubbing the color over the embossed surface. I also used a scrapbook paper (brownish paper under cover). I cut my slots & tabs and assembled the 2 pieces.

After assembly I pressed a clear stamp pad all over the cover and clear embossed it to protect the oil pastels from smearing.

I used my electric fry pan & my Melt Art mat (at around 255 degrees Fahrenheit) to make my Friendship Seal. I sprinkled a layer of UTEE (Gold, then some Bronze and a touch of Pearl), waited for it to melt and removed it from the pan onto a protected surface. My Asian rubber stamp (Prairie Rubber Stamp) was already inked with Staz-On black. I pressed the stamp into the hot UTEE and left it there till it cooled, then removed it. Glued it to my cover with Golden's soft gel medium.

After assembly:  The back of the embossed paper was white, so I used Kaleidacolor stamp pad (Creole Spice) and a stencil brush to get my colors into all the grooves then clear embossed it. Skimmed a Brilliance Dew Drops stamp pad (Pearlescent Olive) and embossed it with Stampendous Gold embossing powder. This is the first time I worked on the "back" side of embossed paper & I absolutely love this effect.

I stamped a quote (Quietfire Design "A journey of a thousand") on the lower right side of the scrapbook paper. It's very subtle, so hard to see, and gold embossed it.

Page 3 & 4:

The scrapbook paper on the back, was white as well, so I used Distress stamp pads (Ant. Linen, Tattered Rose & Walnut Stain) direct to paper and lightly misted to move the colors around. When dry I rubber stamped my quote (Quietfire Design "A word lovingly written") using Color Box Petal Points (Alchemy set).

This is the other half of the cover which was also clear embossed.

The right page is the back of a heavy textured mulberry paper which I reinforced on the fold edge with some left over Linen Hinging tape from a previous project. It was already painted in various shades of gold, perfect. The colors from the technique I did on the textured side bled through to the back. I liked the aged look of it. I bound  a one signature/4 page booklet, that I wrote a poem in, with a piece of orange cotton perle thread and attached a couple charms to the ends (heart & star). Glued the back page of the mini booklet to the mulberry page.  Rubber stamped the flowers with (Rubber Stamp Tapestry Violet set) and Color Box (paint box 12 color set). Details of the booklet are below.

Page 7 & 8:

I colored the textured mulberry paper using a watered down Color Wash (butterscotch), Moon Glows (Golden Doubloon & Teal), and some watered down walnut ink.

Page 8 is the other portion of the back of the scrapbook paper also distressed. I stamped a quote (Quietfire Design "A friend is someone who") again with the Petal Points (alchemy) stamp pad.

Page 9 & 10:

I rubber stamped my Asian word for Happy Birthday (Old Island Rubber Stamp) with Brilliance Dew Drops (Pearlescent Olive) and embossed it with Stampendous Gold embossing powder. Wrote the words Happy Birthday underneath with a gold gel pen, then shadow outlined both with a black micron pen.

The right page is the other half of the textured decorated mulberry paper. I glued down a heavily embossed decorated piece of artwork (see detail pic).

This decorated artwork is something I just learnt in an online class (Jambalaya on Cyberstampers). I Love it and it has so much potential. It uses all the little waste things on your desk.

I started with a dark brown piece of cardstock and just lay whatever scrap pieces were on my desk. The corners from my pages which I cut even smaller, the waste from my border punch, some long slivers of scrapbook paper etc. I carefully put the cardstock into my frying pan (on a piece of silver foil) and sprinkled clear UTEE  all over it. Let it melt so everything became attached. Kept sprinkling more UTEE until I got the look and thickness I wanted. After things were semi attached I also used my heat gun on the more dense UTEE areas that weren't melting fast enough for me. Removed the cardstock from the pan (this is something I decided to try because I didn't like the very raised areas) and immediately placed my melt art mat on top and pressed down. Then with my heat gun again just slightly melted areas that were sharp edges. I cut out my shape and edged it with a Krylon gold leafing pen.

Back Page:

I glued a piece of heavy textured white glittered paper onto the back of the textured mulberry. I used a Greek Key border punch on one edge.

Mini Booklet:

I used a Canson paper in medium brown for the square pages and a yellow golden color for the octagonal pages.  Wrote my quote with a black micron pen.

Poem: Remember that a little love goes a long way. Remember that a lot goes forever. Remember that friendship is a wise investment. Life's treasure's are people together. Realize that it's never too late. Do ordinary things in an extraordinary way. Have health and hope and happiness. take the time to wish upon a star. And don't ever forget not even for a day. How very special you are. Douglas Pagels contribution.
