Caterpillar Binding

The caterpillar binding is an involved binding and not recommended for total beginners.

The book block is done with a one needle coptic binding, then the caterpillar is added for a decorative element.

The booklet in this sample is only a sample, not the actual booklet you will be making.

I used LBS end sheets from Columbia Mills. My journal has 10 signatures of 7 folios (total 28 pages per signature). Page size is 4.25"w x 4.25"h. The covers are bookboard covered with gift wrapping paper from Paper Roots. The caterpillar and coptic binding use 4ply waxed linen thread.

NOTE: I have an added element which is not included in the class - I used the same covering paper to wrap each of my signatures.

SUPPLIES: You will need to bring

• your choice of paper to make a minimum of 6 to 10 signatures of approx 3 to 8 folios with a page size of approx 4.25" to 5.5" w & h. (cut a normal piece of copy paper in half to make 2 folios). You are welcome to mix your papers - ie. watercolor paper, cardstock, text paper, specialty paper etc. Note: place signatures under some heavy books for several days to compress them.

• a new glue stick

• OPTIONAL: As per my note above, should you wish to include covering on your signatures to match your cover paper, you will need to include it as part of your signatures and to bring enough for your covers.

I will supply: bookboard, cover paper, waxed linen thread and all tools.

PAYMENT POLICY: Please note, a reserved place is on a first come first paid basis. Send me an email to let me know you'd like to attend and which classes/dates/times you're signing up for. I will send you a Pay Pal invoice and put you on the list. If I don't receive payment for the class, either by Pay Pal or check within 4 working days after I send the invoice, your name will be dropped down the list.

Please note, checks will be cashed immediately. No refunds issued unless I have to cancel the class.

START TIME: Please note the time of each class and BE ON TIME. It's very inconsiderate if you show up late and disturb everyone else. The class will start on time and you will have to catch up as best you can.

Please also note, "do not bring any tools with you unless you need advice with something".
