Barbara Close - Trees Workshop - Silhouettes, Bkgr'ds & Birch Trees Day 3

Created: May 21, 2021
Modified: May 23, 2021

This class was spread out as 1 - 2hour class every week for 4 weeks.

3rd weeks class was Tree Bark, Silhouettes & Birch Trees. My bark backgrounds were the pits, so no practice images of those sigh!! but I really like my Birch trees.

ID: Birch Trees - And Into The
Size: 8"w x 11"h

On Arches 90# HP watercolor paper.

This is another Birch tree painting I really like.

Wrote my text with a pointed pen and Sumi ink, when dry shadowed with Holbien's Permanent white gouache.

Quote: And into the forest I go to lose my mind and find my soul. John Muir

ID: Tree Bark - Blocks Of Wood
Size: 8"w x 11"h

On Arches 90# HP watercolor paper.

Doing bark is not as easy as it looks... There are probably 6+ layers before I got something I liked. Wrote the quote using a 2.4 parallel pen and Holbien's Permanent white gouache in a Blackletter style.

Quote: We are like blocks of wood, we can change our finish but not our grain. Alan Robert Neal

ID: Silhouettes - You Don't Always
Size: 8"w x 11"h

On Arches 90# HP watercolor paper.

I painted in my sky and foreground, rocky area. Added the silhouette trees then the calligraphy with a pointed pen and Sumi ink in a Copperplate style.

Quote: You don't always need a plan. Sometimes you just need to breathe, trust, let go, and see what happens. Mandy Hale

ID: Practice - Birch Trees
Size: 4"w x 16"h

On Arches Text Wove paper.

We masked off our outside border then created Birch trunks from the masking tape. Lay them here and there, relatively straight but with some tilting for interest. Sponged (I used a sea sponge) the background foliage with various shades of green, yellow, red and blue...

Swiped across the bottom section with some browns. When dry'ish, removed the tape. Put a light dirty water coat on the trees (rather than have them totally white) then added our tree markings with some black and some pencil for tonal values. When totally dry added pencil and paper stump shadow along one edge.

Sponged a bit of foliage on the front of the trees.

Final touch some grass sprigs in the foreground.

On the good one I'll add calligraphy.

ID: Practice - Silhouettes
Size: 7"w x 6"h

On Arches Text Wove paper.

I used a Pentel Pocket Brush pen, but Barbara used some Sumi ink with a brush.
